The Imo State Police Command, has detained three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State for the suspected murder of a 21-year-old undergraduate, Chinedu Christogonus.
A 100-level student of Cyber Security, said to have been beaten to death yesterday by members of the university’s Man O’ War organisation for allegedly stealing N13,500, Sunday PUNCH reports.
The incident led to turmoil in the university as students went on rampage burning buildings and destroying other property on the campus.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the event to our correspondent in a statement yesterday, saying preliminary investigations revealed that Christogonus was allegedly assaulted by several Man O’ War members after he was accused of stealing N13,500 .
The individuals arrested in connection with the incident are Chukwuemeka Benedict, 21, Kelechi Ikenna, 24, and Obioma Anastasia, 21, all 500-level students of FUTO, Okoye said.
According to authorities, preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was allegedly tied up and severely beaten and critically injured.
Preliminary results suggest that the deceased was allegedly tied up and assaulted and had life-threatening injuries. He was thereafter transported to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where medical staff confirmed him dead.
On receipt of the complaint, Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Audu Bosso promptly urged operatives to swing into action, which led to the quick arrest of the perpetrators. The body has been preserved and sent to the morgue for an autopsy, and relevant evidence has been acquired.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Owerri for a thorough, professional and discreet investigation to ensure a comprehensive investigation. He further asked that all those linked with the incident be identified and probed to ensure that justice is delivered.
“The Commissioner of Police assures the family of the deceased, the university community and members of the public that the Command is fully on top of the situation and remain committed to unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death. He underlines that no one, regardless of stature, shall be above the law if found culpable,” the statement said.
Police encouraged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to follow its course, stressing the command’s determination to preserve the rule of law and bring all those involved to justice.
