The immediate past Director of Defence Information, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife have been seized by suspected armed bandits in Katsina State.
The incident, according to reports, occurred on the Katsina-Matazu route as the retired senior military commander was on his way with his wife yesterday.
The men are said to have stopped their vehicle at gunpoint in the Matazu Local Government Area and took them to an unknown destination.
The driver transferring them escaped the encounter with a bullet wounds, sources told Sunday Vanguard.
Major General Abubakar (rtd) was instrumental in Defence communication in the Nigerian Armed Forces, during his tenure as military spokesperson.
The kidnapping has added to mounting concerns on insecurity in the North-West area, notably in Katsina where incidences of abductions and armed attacks have continued to rise, affecting both locals and travelers.
The recent incident shows the persistent security issues in Nigeria despite military operations against armed criminal organizations.
Efforts to get the military authorities to comment on the tragic development were unsuccessful at the time of sending this report.
