The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), the umbrella body of governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has kicked against any alliance or political arrangement that would jeopardise President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid or jeopardise the party’s candidates in the 2027 general election. Government.
The governors stated they will not engage in, support or approve any political arrangement that will weaken the APC or create competing interests in the ruling party, Daily Trust reports.
The view was made public by the Chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, following a closed door meeting of the governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
The incident comes on the heels of alleged political conflicts between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and several APC governors, notably Uzodimma and Kwara state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Wike had spoken about his feud with the two in a conversation with media in Port Harcourt earlier this month.
Take for example, Kwara, he has been promoting this campaign against me everywhere. Yes I have confronted him too. Wike remarked, “I don’t talk about what I can’t defend.
AbdulRazaq had, the minister said, accused him of funding politicians against the governor’s selected candidates in Kwara.
But Wike said the governor should rather be thankful for his contribution in giving a political platform for unhappy APC personalities who defected from the ruling party to the PDP.
He stated such politicians could have joined the wider alliance against Tinubu, but opted to operate within the PDP, which he presented as evidence of the political accommodation he had offered. Politics
AbdulRazaq, on his second term, has been at the center of competing interests in the party over who follows him.
Some APC contenders to the governorship had earlier raised reservations about the direction of the APC in the state while the G15 group of APC stakeholders later publicly challenged the governor’s leadership of the party structure.
Wike’s charge against Uzodinma was not as elaborate but as direct.
“Governor Hope, he knows the support I give him,” he continued, adding that the Imo State governor had once refused to endorse him.
Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been linked to opposition candidates in the 2027 elections in certain states including Imo and Kwara.
Wike has also backed the PDP candidate for the governorship in Imo and Senator Saliu Mustapha for the Kwara Central senatorial seat against Governor AbdulRazaq.
AbdulRazaq defeated APC member Mustapha for the APC ticket in the Kwara Central senatorial district and Mustapha then moved to the PDP.
Reading the communique produced after the meeting, Uzodimma said the goal of the governors was to support candidates officially fielded by the APC at all levels.
He said the forum was not interested in supporting any candidates outside the APC, adding that the party’s candidates were contesting on its platform.
“The APC Governors Forum has resolved unanimously that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels. Government
“This means that the forum has no intention of supporting any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate since our candidates that are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party.
The governors’ campaign promise is just to all APC candidates. “From the party campaign architecture to the grassroots, all levels will be in sync with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party.”
The governors stated their readiness to play major roles in mobilising support for Tinubu’s re-election in their respective states on the proposed APC Presidential Campaign Council.
They said the campaign strategy will be focused on grass-root mobilisation, with efforts to connect communities and engage various demographic groups across the country.
The governors also vowed to improve internal party unity and synchronise campaign systems from the national to the constituency levels. Government
They said they would also continue to pursue development in their various states in keeping with the Renewed Hope program of the administration. schedule.APC governors dump Wike’s
