At least two recently assigned Mobile Police officers attached to Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State have been slain after being ambushed by armed invaders.
The incident happened about 6pm yesterday as the officers were on their way to escort the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo, who was returning to the community from Makurdi, Daily Trust reports.
The event takes to six the number of cops slain in Ayilamo in three days following Friday’s attack that killed four Mobile Police officers and seven civilians in the village.
Identities of the killed policemen were not immediately divulged at the time of reporting this story, although the deceased personnel were said to have been attacked along the route on their way to meet the DPO who was returning to Ayilamo after his trip to Makurdi.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident to journalists today by telephone in Makurdi.
Aondongu said the DPO’s entourage was attacked on its way back from Makurdi to Ayilamo. But said the event was an attack on police personnel.
The PPRO admitted that two cops were killed in the event.
Newsmen were told by residents of the area that the attackers were assumed to be armed invaders operating from woodlands and deserted communities in Tombo Council Ward of Logo LGA.
Residents also expressed alarm about the movement of armed individuals in forests and deserted communities in the vicinity, calling for ongoing security efforts to avoid further attacks.
