Ukrainian officials announced Saturday that at least 37 people have died and more than 40 others have been wounded after a Russian drone strike hit a warehouse in the Kyiv region, causing a major fire and a sequence of explosions that lasted for hours.
The strike occurred late Friday in the town of Myla, in the Bucha district west of Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone targeted the facility at around 8:10 p.m. local time, igniting a big fire before ammunition or other explosive goods kept inside exploded.
The blasts scattered debris throughout the surrounding area and caused considerable damage to local civilian facilities. At least 50 residential buildings were damaged, as well as a care home for old persons and other buildings. Over 370 individuals were evacuated from the region.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated the storage held ammunition and questioned why such goods were maintained close to residential settlements.
Zelenskyy said criminal proceedings have been launched for alleged official negligence, suggesting that authorities are probing not only the Russian strike, but also the conditions of the storage of explosive chemicals at the site.

The devastating hit came when Ukraine was under a heavy wave of Russian air strikes. Drone and missile strikes repeatedly hit Kyiv and other parts of the country, with Ukrainian officials saying air-raid sirens were blaring almost constantly.
The Associated Press said that near Myla it was one of the deadliest assaults in Ukraine this year. The air-defence systems and emergency services in Ukraine have come under growing strain from the ongoing strikes.
