Newcastle United picked up where they left off under new boss Matthias Jaissle as they secured their first Premier League win of the campaign with a 2-0 success on the road against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Newcastle kicked off their league campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Liverpool and produced another solid display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa finding the net in the second half.
Tottenham dominated large parts of the first half and enjoyed a plethora of good chances, but Newcastle custodian Lukas Hornicek made crucial stops to deny the hosts. The Magpies also defended well, Spurs couldn’t convert their possession into clear cut goals.
Newcastle finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Dedić headed it down to Elanga who twisted his marker and sent a low attempt in off the far post to give the visitors a deserved lead.
And the visitors were two goals up after just 11 minutes.
From a corner at the far post Nick Woltemade headed the ball down and Yoane Wissa reacted superbly, getting low to tip the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
Tottenham tried to counter but their attack was becoming increasingly predictable and Newcastle dealt with a series of crosses into the box with ease.
Spurs now have no points from their first two Premier League games after the loss. Spurs started their campaign with a 3-0 loss at Brentford and suffered another home setback under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Meanwhile the victory is a big step forward for Jaissle. The new boss at Newcastle has overseen a draw against Liverpool and an impressive away win against Tottenham in his first two league games, perhaps suggesting that the Magpies are building a good identity under the German coach.
