The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, group led by Kabiru Turaki, SAN, yesterday, granted former President Goodluck Jonathan a waiver from its presidential screening procedure ahead of the 2027 election. Party sources stated that he was presently the only presidential aspirant in the party.
says have it that the former Niger state governor, Babangida Aliyu, who represented former Vice President Namadi Sambo, chairman of the screening committee, claimed the party did not see the need to screen Jonathan, given the roles he had previously held, says Vanguard.
“The party had already granted a waiver to a presidential aspirant from screening,” Aliyu stated. Like I mentioned in the beginning he was deputy governor, governor, vice president, president so we didn’t see anything that needed screening.
So the party had given him a waiver. That is former President Jonathan. And that is, in other words, he has been announced and cleared as candidate of the PDP for the Presidential Election.
The PDP, Aliyu said, has also granted a waiver to its National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, a former deputy governor and ambassador.
“The other waiver is also for the former deputy governor and ambassador, the secretary of the party, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja who for many reasons, has to be in Ibadan, Oyo State to ensure that everything has gone well. ‘So we also declared him as having been issued a waiver by the party,’’ Aliyu added.
“The committee has screened aspirants from Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Akwa Ibom and Delta States so far and the exercise will continue for those who are yet to appear before the panel within the stipulated period,” he said.
“We are very happy that even those who have been trying to kill the party cannot succeed and by the grace of God and the constitution of Nigeria, the party will contest this election,” he continued.
Asked if Jonathan is the only aspirant seeking the PDP ticket presently, Aliyu said: “As far as I know, as far as of today, at this moment, yes, sir.
