The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended Chief from the position of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) pending the outcome of disciplinary procedure against him.
The decision was stated in a statement sent to press in Abuja on Wednesday by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir E. A. The suspension was determined at its 173rd General Meeting on June 23, 2026, the committee said.
The statement said the action was conducted in accordance with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and other regulations relating to the rank. The committee said the measure will be in force pending a final decision in the ongoing disciplinary procedures at the LPPC Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee and other related processes.
The suspension aims to protect the integrity, dignity and reputation of the SAN rank during the review of the matters under review, the LPPC stated. It ordered that Ozekhome shall not hold himself forth or be referred to be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria till the disciplinary action is determined.
The committee said it remained committed to maintaining high standards of ethics, discipline and public confidence in the legal profession.
Ozekhome’s professional status is now in a transitory but delicate situation, as the SAN title is a significant indicator of seniority and influence in Nigeria’s legal system. This does not constitute a definitive finding of misbehaviour but effectively bars him from the privileges and professional recognition that go with the title until the disciplinary procedure is completed.
The outcome of the current proceedings will be critical in deciding whether his position will be reinstated or more penalties will be imposed, representing a key point in his career and standing in the legal community.
