A 20-year-old student at the University of Lagos told a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday that a 53-year-old lecturer at the school, Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, allegedly attacked her in his office.
The student told her story to Justice Oyindamola Ogala while testifying as the first prosecution witness in the trial of Ojogbo, according to The PUNCH.
Ojogbo is being prosecuted by the Lagos State Government on two counts of rape and sexual assault.
The prosecution’s lawyer, A.O. Azeez, led the witness in evidence-in-chief. The witness indicated that the event happened on August 22, 2025, at around 1200 hours, on the Akoka campus of the university.
The victim started by saying, “I am a student at the University of Lagos,” when she got into the witness box.
She remembered that the day before the event, the defendant came up to her while she was taking a test.
Before the 22nd of August, 2025, the victim said, “On the 21st of August, I was taking an exam that had nothing to do with banking.”
“I was in the first row, in the first seat. While I was doing my test, the defendant came in and remarked, “Hope it is what I read that came out?” I responded yes, that I knew one part better than the other.
“He told me not to worry and to come see him in his office after my exam,” she claimed.
The witness informed the court that she tried to see him twice following the test but couldn’t find him in his office.
She said, “The second time I went with my friend, he wasn’t there either, so I left.”
The second day, August 22, I had another test from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., but the defendant was the one who took us.
But on August 22, after taking another test, she stated she saw the teacher near her faculty.
“I saw him on my way to my hostel. He told me to wait. He told me to wait, and I did because he was talking to someone else.
“We went to his office together after that,” she claimed.
She informed the court, “His office is underground,” when she talked about it. There is no secretary and no window.
She added that while they were chatting, two female students came into the office for a short while to talk to him about the tests they had missed, but the defendant sent them away.
“He told them to go away because they were bothering him,” she stated.
She said that the event happened not long after.
“They didn’t close the door well on their way out.” He said to me, “Close the door.” “She claimed, “As I was about to close it, he stood behind me and pulled me to the couch next to the door.”
The prosecution witness, who was crying, said, “He started touching me, caressing my breasts, and then forced himself on me.” He raped me.
She further told the court that the defendant allegedly made promises about her schoolwork following the encounter.
“He said he would be in charge of my project in Year Four.” “He took my exam ticket, made a copy, gave me one, and got my phone number,” she stated.
The witness stated she cried as she left the office and told someone right away.
“I went to my friend crying, and we agreed to tell someone,” she added.
She told the court that she initially told a lecturer in her department, who then called her uncle, who is also a lecturer, before they went to the head of the department.
“We then went to Dr. Abu, a professor in my department. He phoned my uncle, who is also a professor in the department. After that, we headed to the HOD’s office. He asked me whether what I was saying was real when we got to the HOD office. He added, “Where is the proof, and why don’t I record it with my phone?”
“Then he called the defendant into his office. When the defendant came, he said nothing about what had transpired and that I was just lying about him.
“The HOD told my uncle and me to let it go and stated that next time I should be more careful when I’m alone with a teacher. After that, we exited his office.
“My uncle said we can’t just let it go like that. We went to school at Servicom. A woman and I went to the medical center for tests when I got to Servicom. After that, they gave them medications.
She also said that she told the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency about the case, and they told her to call the police.
She said, “They sent me to Bariga Police Station and then to WARIF for another test.”
She also said that the police command’s Gender Unit took up the investigation of the case after that.
The witness also told the court that there were attempts to settle after the report.
She said, “After all this, the defendant’s family and friends started calling for a meeting.”
Justice Ogala put off the case to April 27, 2026, so that the witness could be cross-examined.
