Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government wants the country to have a one-party system.
Lawal, who was a guest on Channels Television last night, said that the ruling party would not be able to win a free and fair election. Because of this, they are trying to stay in power without any opposition.
“They want a system with only one party. Lawal said, “Look, it’s very clear that every Nigerian knows this government can’t afford to hold an election in a free and fair way because they will lose badly.”
When asked if the ADC had polls to back up his assertion, Lawal claimed yes, but the party would not share what he called “internal information.”
In the past few weeks, the ADC has been attacking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying that the chairman is biased against the party.
This comes after INEC decided to stop recognizing the leadership of the David Mark-led National Working Committee of the ADC and any other faction until a legal case is resolved.
The election body also said it wouldn’t keep an eye on the party’s conventions and congresses.
The ADC, on the other hand, went ahead with its congresses and conducted its national convention on Tuesday. Lawal called it a “success,” even though he said the government tried to stop it.
Even though INEC wasn’t at the convention, the former SGF said the exercise was still genuine because the party followed the advice of its lawyers. He further said that the ADC would be on the ballot in 2027, no matter what INEC said.
“We don’t pay attention to INEC.” They are not the High Court, the Supreme Court, or even the Appeal Court. INEC can say whatever they want, then. He remarked, “No matter what INEC says, we are going to be on the ballot. We are going to vote in this election.”
The leader of the ADC also indicated that his party has answers to Nigeria’s problems, but that its main goal right now is to keep the APC from staying in power.
“First things first, we know we have the answer. We think we have the answer to the problem because of the quality of the individuals in our party and the way we run our democracy in our party. “First things first, stop this government from doing what they are doing,” he stated.
