Tomorrow, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu will officially swear in IGP Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police.
The Guardian says that the oath-taking ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) weekly meeting.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, told State House reporters.
It is important to note that Disu will not go before the Senate for confirmation, which is a change from how things have been done in the past.
His inauguration comes after the Nigeria Police Council, which met at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa and was led by President Tinubu, confirmed him yesterday.
The meeting was called to officially approve his appointment after Kayode Egbetokun, the former IGP, stepped down.
Since last week, Disu had been functioning as Inspector-General, and immediately after his appointment, he was given the status of Inspector-General. Before he was promoted, he was an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).
People think he has roughly two months left until he can retire.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, several state governors, and other official members were all at the Police Council meeting.
The 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police make up the Nigeria Police Council. The president is in charge of the council.
The Council was set up by the Police Act 2020 to give advice and keep an eye on police policy, administration, budgets, and senior appointments.
Disu’s swearing-in comes at a time when people are more worried about security across the country. This puts immediate pressure on the new police chief to make reforms stick and make the Force work better.
