The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a new operational strategy to enhance its preparations and anticipate possible obstacles for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The Guardian claims that the strategy hinges on a real-time monitoring system that will enable the commission’s headquarters to track the readiness of its offices in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, spoke at the inauguration of a two-day Strategic Operational Workshop for the commission’s Administrative Secretaries in Lagos.
The Commission is unveiling an Administrative Secretary Master Operational Tracker Template, a data-driven tool to offer real-time information on the readiness of INEC offices across the country. Campaigns & Elections
The technology will be immediately connected to the INEC Election Monitoring and Support Center, allowing the commission to monitor important parts of election preparation such as the distribution of materials and the training of people.
Amupitan said the goal intended to make the commission more proactive in managing elections by anticipating and dealing with any difficulties before they disturb the electoral process.
He said that Administrative Secretaries are the “engine room” of INEC’s activities at the state level and asked them to maintain rigorous operational discipline as preparations for the polls gather pace.
The INEC Chairman said lessons from recent off-cycle elections, especially Osun State election, should be escalated and turned into a national norm before 2027.

He said the commission needs an administrative culture that could deliver credible elections and asked its officials at the state level to identify and resolve bottlenecks that could impede preparations.
The new plan will focus on five key areas which are deemed important to the effective conduct of the elections.
They include voter registration, Permanent Voter Card distribution as the country’s voter register nears 100 million people.
INEC will also review logistics and management of election materials including the receiving, auditing, storage and deployment of sensitive materials across the country.
Another key area of preparations will be electoral technology, as officials are expected to enhance their knowledge and handling of systems such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, the INEC Results Viewing Portal and the Candidate Registration and Results Management System.
Human resources will also be addressed, including recruitment, vetting and training of ad-hoc election officials in technology.
The Commission will also be working on financial compliance such as automation of workflow processes and compliance with procurement requirements.
The INEC’s preparedness is coming at a time political activities are heating up ahead of the 2027 elections as political parties start to position themselves for battles at the federal and state levels. Campaigns & Elections
The commission’s timetable has the final register of voters set to be issued on January 11, 2027, ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections that are scheduled to kick off on January 16.
Campaign activities are set to conclude on February 18, and a possible presidential run-off has been scheduled for February 28.
The Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are expected to hold on March 6.
