A site engineer, identified as Badmos Olatunji Monsor, has reportedly died and no fewer than 15 construction workers sustained varying degrees of injuries following a violent clash at a construction site in the Agidingbi area of Ikeja, Lagos.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, involved an alleged invasion by armed individuals during ongoing development work on a parcel of land reportedly allocated by the Lagos State Government, reports Daily Independent.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the site and began shooting sporadically, causing panic among workers and residents in the area.
Some of the workers were said to have been assaulted with sharp objects and other dangerous items. Three construction workers have also been declared missing.
According to sources, four workers affiliated with the late site engineer have been taken into custody by the police for questioning as part of ongoing investigations.
Documents sighted by our correspondent show that the disputed land was allocated to a company, WGC, through letters issued by the Lagos State Government dated October 13, 2023 (Ref: LASG/LB S0000222499) and December 18, 2024 (Ref: LASG/LB S0000228005). The company is represented by one Alhaji Akeem Osuolale.
A petition addressed to the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Government by the company claims lawful ownership of two parcels of land measuring 7,500 sqm and 10,650 sqm, situated along Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
Residents of nearby estates reported the sound of gunfire and notified the Alausa police division. Before security operatives could respond, the attackers had reportedly fled the scene, leaving behind the lifeless body of the engineer and a firearm, which has since been recovered by the police.
A senior police source at Area F, who asked not to be named, confirmed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, has ordered a thorough investigation. The arrested individuals have reportedly been interviewed, and efforts are ongoing to track down those behind the attack.
In a brief response, a government official confirmed that the Lagos State government has also directed law enforcement agencies to probe the circumstances surrounding the violent incident and the death of the site worker.
Meanwhile, calm has reportedly returned to the area, although tension remains high among workers and residents alike as investigations continue.
