Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, did not cast his ballot in the governorship and state house of assembly elections held on Saturday at his polling place in Abeokuta-North local government area, Abeokuta-North Ward 11, Olusomi compound, Totoro, Ogun State.

Since the country’s return to democracy in 1999, this was the first election in which the country’s two most recent leaders chose not to cast a ballot.

When Nigeria transitioned from military rule to democracy in 1999, Obasanjo was its first elected president.

In 2003, he was chosen to serve another term.

He had previously held the office of military president of Nigeria.

Obasanjo participated in the presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25, 2023, after previously endorsing Labour Party candidate Peter Obi.

However, the journalist who flocked to the former President’s voting unit on Saturday to photograph him exercising his right to vote in the governorship and House of Assembly elections was let down when he could not be located.

Obasanjo’s media assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, confirmed after being contacted that his boss had left the country ten days prior to the governorship and State Assembly elections.

In a phone interview, Akinyemi made the suggestion that Obasanjo had been scheduled to return the day before the elections but had not yet done so.

He said, “Chief Obasanjo visited India, the US, and the UK ten days ago. He was supposed to arrive back in the nation yesterday, March 17, but he was unable to.
