Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, thinks Nigeria’s insecurity concerns can only be solved by God.
Nigeria is seeing a revival of insecurity with reports of killings and abductions in several parts of the country including recent reports from Oyo and Borno between May 15 and 17
It was claimed that gunmen had invaded three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and abducted 39 pupils and seven instructors.
In Borno, armed groups raided schools in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area and abducted 42 kids.
Matawalle told BBC Hausa that insecurity was a national challenge that required concerted efforts from both the security agencies and the citizens to address.
He asked Nigerians to support security authorities and pray for peace, and warned politicians not to exploit the situation for political purposes.
“It is discouraging and we all have to rise to the occasion to ensure that security agencies and Nigerians work together to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate on the basis of political allegiance or religion. It can happen to any of us.
So, we have called on the opposition not to use the insecurity to stir the people. It is a problem that can happen to any person and no Nigerian is satisfied with it. Unfortunately, apparently some opposition members are happy with the scenario. They don’t care about people. Their concern is to present the government as a failure to serve their own political objectives, and to mislead the people into believing that they are the only ones who can solve insecurity.
“Only God can end this insecurity, together with our prayers and efforts collectively. It should not be a vehicle to blame others or earn political points,” he said.
He said that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was failing, with some people circulating old and deceptive footage on social media to suggest this.
Matawalle said security operatives are working round the clock to smash terrorists unleashing attacks in sections of the country, noting that insecurity is not a unique occurrence with Nigeria.
“There are videos that are fake and recycled, some from the Jonathan administration and others from countries like Burkina Faso and Mali but they are being passed off as incidents that happened under this administration. That is not the case.
“Our security operatives are working round the clock throughout the country. We’ve been aggressive in going after terrorists, but this isn’t a problem that can be solved tomorrow. Some of the powerful nations of the globe have been fighting insecurity for years and still face it.
“We encourage Nigerians to continue to pray for us and support efforts to end this challenge.” he explained.
