At the time, his posts calling black women unattractive and suggesting white women are better than black women surfaced and the black community turned their backs on him, refusing to demand justice.
Courtney was charged with second-degree murder, but under the bargain approved in court Monday, August 10, 2026, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
She was sentenced to six years prison with five years probation and must undergo a mental health evaluation and therapy. She’s been in detention since her arrest in 2022, so that’s 4 years, but she’ll only spend 2 years in prison now, her attorneys say it’ll be more like 18 to 20 months.
She had been looking at a maximum 30 years in prison if convicted on the second-degree murd£r accusation.
Clenney, dressed in an orange jail suit, appeared composed as he entered his plea, but broke down as Obumseli’s mother spoke.“There is nothing that can describe what a mother feels standing at the grave of her child,” stated the mother. “There are also the things that will never happen to me now that he’s gone. The birthdays, the holidays we won’t spend with him, the conversations we will never have, the person he would have grown into, those losses endure long after today’s court case is over.”

After the hearing, Clenney’s counsel and parents attended a news conference where defence attorney Frank Prieto said that the choice to take the plea offer was “common sense.”What matters to me today is that for the first time in over four years there is an end in sight. “She has a future ahead of her. As her father I’m looking forward to that day that she can start living her life,” father Kim Clenney said. “I’m looking forward to the day I can sit across from her face-to-face and hug her and tell her how much I love her.”
“This plea agreement was reached in full consultation and approval of Christian’s family,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement. The plea deal brought Christian Obumseli’s family what they’d been asking for all along: Courtney Clenney admitting to killing him. The statement said: “This appeal has been made with the full consultation and approval of Christian’s family. Assistant State Attorneys working this case have stayed focused on the heart of the evidence that Clenney stabbed Christian Obumseli as part of a pattern of escalating violence toward him. “There is nothing that can heal the wounds inflicted that day in April, but I hope today’s guilty plea brings a measure of justice to his family that has been denied for too long.”
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office had depicted Obumseli as a victim of domestic abuse, stating the couple’s relationship was “extremely tempestuous and combative.”
Clenney’s defenders said she was a victim of domestic abuse and that she stabbed Obumseli in self-defence.
I took a knife and I said, ‘Don’t get anywhere near me. “I have no plans of using it,” Clenney told detectives.
Prosecutors say she murdered him citing proof of her anger toward Obumseli in tapes NBC6 got from 2022 and 2024.
Clenney has been held without bond in jail as the case has dragged on for years. And the judicial battle eventually extended beyond the murder charge.
Clenney and her parents hacked into Obumseli’s laptop, prosecutors said, resulting in computer-related crimes.
That case took another turn when a court found prosecutors had inappropriately obtained evidence protected by the attorney-client privilege.
Clenney and her parents had the computer-related accusations filed against them dropped.
And other black people are still supporting what many are calling a lenient sentence for Courtney given to her after not forgiving Christian Obumseli for his hate comment toward black women.
