Peter Keborkwu, 80, hired a 32-year-old building worker named Alex Kehinde to fix up one of his homes about a month ago. Little did he know that he was excavating his own tomb.
That deal, which seemed normal, cost him his life. According to Vanguard, the police in Delta State stated the event happened in Ogwashi Ukwu, which is the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area and is close to Asaba, the state capital.
A source in the neighborhood, on the other hand, said the sad event happened in Isele Azagba, which is close by.
Kehinde and his accomplice, Egbon ID, who is still on the run, kidnapped the unsuspecting landlord from his own property. Both men are craftsmen. Keborkwu later died from not being able to breathe.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said that Kehinde was detained in Lagos while giving an update on the investigation at the Anti-Kidnap and Cybercrime Unit of the Delta State Police Command. He had run away there to waste his N1 million part of the ransom that the two of them got from Keborkwu’s son after they killed the old man.
A devilish act
According to SP Edafe, the victim was found dead on February 3 in an upstairs kitchen where the accused had kept him in the refurbished property.
The Delta PPRO said that about a month ago at Ogwashi Ukwu, the suspect had hired Kehinde to fix up the property before renting it out.
The PPRO said, “After some back-and-forth, the landlord gave the worker N200,000.” He then kept pushing him to hire extra people to finish the task on schedule. He obtained the extra workers.
“After finishing the task, Kehinde paid the extra workers who had been working on it and required the rest of the money to pay himself and the accomplice, who is now on the run.
“Because they needed money and their payment wasn’t ready, the accomplice sold him the idea of kidnapping their client so that money could come.”
“One day, Keborkwu went to the site, and they tricked him into going upstairs by saying there was a plumbing problem that needed his attention. After he went upstairs with them, they held the homeowner down and made him sit down.
“When the person who was kidnapped tried to scream for help, they placed a piece of work foam into his mouth and tied it together, covering his nose to keep him quiet. He died from lack of air.
“After leaving him dead in the building, the criminals stole Keborkwu’s motorcycle and phone and went to Ogbe Ogonogo in Asaba, the state capital. They took off the SIM card, sold the phone for N30,000, and left the bike somewhere else.
“After that, they put the SIM card into another phone and called the victim’s son, saying they had taken his father.” They were able to get a N2 million ransom from the son, even though they killed Mr. Keborkwu.
Kehinde’s admission
Kehinde confirmed the PPRO’s claims by saying, “I got in touch with the man (the victim) through an engineer.” We really needed money after the work. The notion of kidnapping came from Egbon, the guy who worked with me.
“We carried him upstairs that day, pretending to show him a leaking pipe. After that, we held him. He began to yell. My guy used foam to mask his mouth so that our neighbors couldn’t hear.
“We didn’t see that he was dead.”
He started to shake before we ran down the steps. Egbon came downstairs to greet me with his phone and then his bike. We sold the phone at Ogbe Ogonogo for 30,000 Naira.
Kehinde also said, “I can’t remember how much ransom we asked for from the son,” which seems to suggest that his accomplice in crime was in charge. I only know that we got N2 million.
“Egbon and I split the money, with each of us getting N1 million. I have already used up my share. “I was taken into custody in Lagos.”
SP Edafe said that the accomplice who is still on the run has nowhere to hide. He also said that the Delta Police Command would catch anyone implicated by any means required.
