The family of the late Lieutenant Jude Osondu Ude has demanded for immediate justice and a complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding his murder. They are also worried about reports of internal sabotage inside the Nigerian Army.
The family, through social critic Ifeanyi Ejiofor, called for immediate action from top military officials in a strongly worded press statement released on Saturday and titled “Blood Within the Barracks: When Duty is Betrayed and Honour Abandoned – The Tragic, Untold Demise of a Young Soldier.”
They explicitly asked Christopher Musa, the Minister of Defence, Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, and Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, to carry out a full, open, and strict investigation into what happened.
On March 15, 2026, Ude was reportedly stabbed inside the 17 Brigade Garrison in Katsina State, which is supposed to be a safe and brotherly place for soldiers. He died on March 22 after fighting for his life in the hospital.
His family said that his killing had “the hallmarks of internally orchestrated attacks” and warned that rumors of competition, sabotage, and secret cooperation inside the military should not be overlooked.
They said that justice must not only be done, but also be seen to be done. They stressed that not acting would make people lose faith in the military.
The statement said, “We will not let silence win where outrage is needed.” “Don’t let it become normal for a soldier to be afraid of both the enemy outside and the dagger inside.”
The family gave the authorities a 14-day deadline, promising to use all legal measures to hold them accountable if no real action is made.
The family was upset over what they called stunning indifference by the military after Ude’s death, in addition to the circumstances of his demise. They say that his body was left behind, which meant that his elderly father, a retired soldier, had to pay for the cost of moving it from Katsina to Enugu, which was more than ₦750,000, as well as other burial-related costs.
They were also upset because there were no military honors at his burial on April 5, 2026, in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. They said that no members of the Nigerian Army, including the 82 Division, were there.
The statement said, “He was buried as if he had never worn the uniform,” calling the affair a “national embarrassment.”
Late Ude, who had a Master’s degree and was waiting to be confirmed as a Lieutenant, was known to be a disciplined and brave soldier. At first, he was sent to Ibadan, but subsequently he was sent to Katsina, where he worked for the 17 Brigade and is said to have become the head of the Garrison.
The family said that his strong opposition to insecurity may have made him a target of “shadowy interests” in the system.
They called the official story of an ambush “convenient and misleading” and said that the real reason for his killing is much more diabolical.
The message ended with, “A nation that doesn’t honor its fallen heroes does more than betray the dead; it puts the living in danger.”
