Today, some people in Ilu-Abo, which is in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, blocked the Akure/Owo highway because they say there have been too many murders and kidnappings in the area.
Reports from NAN say that the demonstrators said that suspected gunmen killed one of the residents on his property this morning.
People, largely young people, stopped traffic from moving freely, leaving drivers stuck on the highway.
The demonstrators held signs with messages like “We Are Dying, Save Our Soul,” “Mr. Governor, Please Help Us,” “Our Children Are in Danger,” and “We Cannot Go to Farms Again,” among others.
Joseph Adee, one of the residents, told reporters that they couldn’t go to their farms because of the constant kidnappings and murders in the area.
The demonstrators asked the authorities to help them deal with the area’s high level of crime.
He said, “We won’t leave here until Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa comes to talk to us because we can’t go to our farms anymore because it’s not safe.”
Mr. Adebowale Lawal, the state’s Commissioner of Police, asked the demonstrators to let cars pass freely, but they refused.
Lawal told the people that the police and other security services, such the Amotekun Corps, would keep them and their property safe.
The CP vowed to send more police officers and tactical units to help with the security issue. He also stated that police officers would work with other security agencies to make the neighborhoods safer.
“We know all of your complaints, and we are working together to solve the security problems in the area.”
He said, “Police and other security agencies are working hard to keep everyone safe.”
The police chief also went to see Oba Olu Falae, the traditional leader of Ilu-Abo, and told him what the police were doing to make the region safer.
Gunmen recently took a woman and a couple hostage in Ilu-Abo, and they shot and killed a businessman.
Gunmen kidnapped Mr. Joseph Aladesuyi, the Secretary of Okeluju Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in the Akoko North-West Local Council Area of the state, along with two other people on his property in Ilu-Abo yesterday.
