Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has asked President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his directive regarding the removal of police officers from Very Important Persons (VIPs).
According to Channels TV, on November 23, Tinubu issued an order for the police personnel who were currently protecting VIPs in the country to leave, stating that they would be used to deal with the security issues facing the country.
The president stated that instead of depending on police officers, VIPs in need of security protection will now need to request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Akpabio voiced concerns about federal MPs’ safety during a joint session of the National Assembly today, just after President Tinubu gave the 2026 budget presentation.
The former governor of Akwa Ibom State, however, voiced concern that the removal of their security personnel had put federal parliamentarians at risk.
“Just one thing, Mr. President. Some members of the National Assembly said, “I should let you know that they might not be able to go home today because they might be picked up,” as we instruct the security services to remove police officers from areas of concern.
In light of this, we implore the President to reconsider the ruling. “May God grant you, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and our National Assembly blessings,” Akpabio remarked.
Additionally, the Senate President praised the President for the economic changes his government has implemented since taking office on May 29, 2023.
He assured Nigerians of prosperous days ahead, emphasizing that the reforms are producing the intended results.
“Perfection has never been the tale of our country. The people are driven by a strong sense of purpose, and the story has always been one of tenacity.
The National Assembly is prepared for you, Mr. President. We are prepared to accept the budget for 2026. We sympathize with the suffering you have endured over the past year, and we also applaud your administration’s reform initiative.
