The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to contest the judgement nullifying its registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stating it would utilise its constitutional right of appeal.
The party’s spokesman Osa Director reacting to the ruling told JoyNews the NDC was waiting for the certified copy of the judgement before making a detailed statement on the court’s decision.
“However, he told The Nation that the party has resolved to go to the appeal court.
“We are still awaiting a copy of the judgement. ‘We will make a detailed statement after reading the full judgement,’ he added.
The spokesman said: “For the moment, we will certainly use our right of appeal.
“We will challenge the ruling, it is our constitutional right to appeal and we will exercise that right,” he said.
In response, the NDC’s General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the party would appeal the judgement nullifying its registration.
The party’s reaction followed a Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, in a judgement that nullified its registration by INEC, a development that could have far-reaching implications for the NDC’s participation in the country’s political process ahead of the 2027 general election. The NDC however said it would not comment further on the substance of the judgement until it has examined the full wording of the court’s ruling.
The party’s planned appeal will most likely lead to a new judicial struggle over its legality and continued existence as a registered political party.
