In response to fresh threats to national security, the Senate has reconstituted the Committee on Intelligence and National Security and announced sweeping changes to other standing committees.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, who serves as Senate President, made the announcement during today’s plenary session.
As a result of the change, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi State will now head the Senate committee responsible for intelligence and national security. He previously headed the committee on National Planning.
Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi State was appointed as the new chairman of the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, which was reorganized by the Senate.
Senator Buba was last week ousted as Chairman of the committee on National Security and Intelligence.
Also, the committee on national planning now has Senator Mustafa Musa of Yobe State as its chairman.
The Senate committee on Air Force has also been revised with Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu State taking over as Acting Chairman. Senator Ngwu had served as the committee’s deputy chairman before the former chairman, Senator Akwashiki became indisposed.
Officials say the shakeup is an attempt to better monitor the organization and respond to new threats to national security.
