Killing repentant bandits and secessionists who have surrendered is a violation of religious principles and international law, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi says.
Those who lay down their arms and really reject violence should be offered an opportunity for rehabilitation, not death, he said.
“Islam does not permit the killing of those who repent after conflict and international humanitarian law protects those who lay down arms and are no longer involved in hostilities,” Gumi said.
Instead of killing such people he said they should be taken through the legal processes and rehabilitated if necessary.
The cleric also emphasised his support for discussion and non-kinetic measures to addressing insecurity, saying that enduring peace can only be achieved by combining military operations with reconciliation and rehabilitation for those willing to lay down their weapons.
