A woman, Bintu, has told a Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that she wants her marriage to her husband, Adele, dissolved over charges of infidelity, domestic abuse and threats to her life.
Bintu told the court that she lives in constant fear of her husband because of his irresponsible lifestyle, Saturday Tribune writes.
She said Adele often ignored her and their six children and starved them, squandering his earnings on other women.
She said he time and time again brought his lovers into their married house and slept with them on their bed.
The complainant also claimed her spouse was physically abusive, beating her so often she needed a few days to recover from the injuries.
She further criticised him for coming to her shop again and over again to fight with her and destroy her merchandise, which she said eventually spoilt her source of income.
Bintu told the court her marriage had brought her nothing but grief and hardship and requested the court to terminate the union.
The defendant, Adele, was not in court although she was presented with a court summons.
Bintu testified to the court, “After meeting for a few months, my husband and I had an introduction ceremony and started living as husband and wife.
“But he never paid the dowry.
Soon I discovered that my husband was irresponsible, morally bankrupt and reckless.
“He was always neglecting me and our six children, not providing basic needs, but spending his earnings on his lovers.
He used to bring these women to our house and sleep with them on our marital bed.
Every time I questioned his behaviour, he would beat me up and I would suffer injuries that took days to heal.
He has never showed any care for the education of our children or our future.
“I tried my best to support our children through my small business, but he always came to my shop to fight with me and break my goods until my business collapsed.
Now I live from hand to mouth because I have no one to help me financially.
“I do not wish to continue this marriage and respectfully ask the court to dissolve our marriage.
“I am also praying for custody of our children and for the court to direct my husband to take responsibility for their maintenance. “I also want an order restraining him from threatening me or invading my privacy.”
The President of the court, Mrs. S. M. Akintayo, listened to the evidence of the plaintiff and adjourned the case for judgement. Executive Branch
