The Grenada government has introduced visa-free entrance for Nigerians as part of measures to develop relationship with Nigeria and enhance cooperation in trade, tourism and business.
The news was made by the Consul of Grenada to Nigeria, Abidemi Sonoiki, at a meeting with journalists in Nigeria.
He said Grenada already has unfettered entrance for Nigerians and is awaiting Nigeria’s response through appropriate diplomatic channels.
It is a policy to ease movement between the two countries and to provide additional chances for business and tourism,” he said.
He also said discussions are underway to set up a direct aircraft route between Nigeria and Grenada, which could commence in roughly six months if allowed.
He said stronger air transport connections will facilitate movement of people between the two countries and enhance trade, tourism and cultural exchange.
“Nigeria is an important partner in Africa and Grenada is also positioning to be a gateway to the wider Caribbean region,” he said.
Grenada, the consul said, was a peaceful country with a modest population of roughly 125,000 and a low crime rate.
“The local currency has been stable for years and that has helped business growth and foreign investment,” he said.
He also said tourism is the major component of Grenada’s economy with visitors traveling to the island for holidays, marriages, education and cultural events.
He said the country has a lot of prospects for investors in fields such as tourism, aviation, agriculture, education, fintech, real estate and maritime services.
Sonoiki said Grenada is open to skilled people including teachers, medical workers, craftsmen and hotel professionals, but admittance is based on qualifications and immigration laws.
The strategy is not designed to promote unqualified relocation but to bring in people who can contribute to the economy, he said.
He also mentioned that Nigerian students are already in places like St. George’s University and the community is increasing slowly.
He said improved awareness, direct flights and deeper cooperation will enable both countries gain more from trade and investment prospects.
