Hon. Natasha Osawaru Idibia, wife of music icon Innocent “2Baba” Idibia and member representing Egor Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, has formally decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Nigeria Democratic Congress. The legislator was received with the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, Charity Aiguobarueghian and other political gladiators from the states of Edo and Gombe during a ceremony on Thursday at the Abuja residence of the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson.
Speaking to the new arrivals, Dickson assured them of justice and equal opportunities within the party adding that the NDC remained devoted to internal democracy, discipline and inclusion. The party is open to all Nigerians who believe in its objective of good administration, national unity and inclusive development. “It is focused on women and youth participation,” he added. He also advised against personal ambition prevailing over the interest of the party and stressed the necessity for unity and structure in political organisations.
Osawaru who spoke at the ceremony expressed hope about the future of the party and commended Dickson’s leadership. “It certainly hasn’t been easy. But we thank God that we still have a leader like Senator Dickson. It always reminds me where we are now, and where the country is intended to go. It is clear that the country is to salute him and the NDC for this. “I also believe that very soon, the NDC will take over the country,” she added.
The ceremony also saw the handing of membership cards to the new members and was further graced by 2Baba who gave a short musical performance as a symbolic gesture. The singer arrived in a white shirt with the message “Natasha Don Come o,” indicating support for his wife’s political action. In his remarks, Dickson acknowledged the musician and called him on stage to perform as part of the celebration.
Osawaru has indicated her intention to seek re-election on the NDC ticket. In a campaign flier received by media agencies, the lawmaker whimsically read NDC as “Natasha Don Come”, saying with her alignment with the new platform, a new Edo state will arise. She has also announced her support for the presidential bid of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, sharing a selfie of herself with the former governor of Anambra State and encouraging Nigerians to support him.
The defection is coming days after Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the NDC in what is widely considered as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 national elections. The initiative was also sponsored by activist Aisha Yesufu, who recently parted ways with the African Democratic Congress, saying it was a turning point in Nigerian politics. The aim is to create a society where the child of nobody may be somebody without knowing anybody,” she said.
