The economic impact of the military coup in Gabon this month will determine Moody’s next move on the country’s credit rating, and Moody’s is also working through another downgrade review of Niger’s rating after the country’s coup in late July.

Despite Moody’s two-notch downgrade of Niger’s Caa2 rating and its “stable” outlook on Gabon’s slightly higher Caa1 score, the two countries have experienced the seventh and eighth coups in West and Central Africa, respectively, in the last three years.
