According to Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State, the Federal Government’s ineffective response to the fuel subsidy crisis has shocked and scared him. Th…Palliative care is a lie, he claims; the people of Edo can count on his help.

Mr. Godwin Obaseki, governor of EDO State, has expressed shock and fear at the Federal Government’s inability to plan and respond effectively to the fuel subsidy removal policy that has further impoverished Nigerians and inflicted hardship and suffering on the people.

Obaseki told reporters in Benin City that he had sounded the alarm because of the central government’s poor economic management, adding that the situation in the country was deteriorating.

“I have always warned,” the governor declared. Earlier this year, on May Day, I issued a warning to Nigerians. I told them we can no longer ignore the reality that Nigeria’s previous economic structure no longer exists and that the country must instead devise a new one.

The exchange rate is being brought into parity, and the subsidy has been removed. Free money is rapidly approaching its final days. As a result, these policies will fall heaviest on the shoulders of the most helpless members of our society.

‘I am shocked that people who campaigned around the Country, saying that they will remove subsidies, had no clear plans on what to do after subsidy removal,’ he said. They have no idea how to help the people who will be hurt by the subsidy cuts.

In response to the current situation, one person said, “I am shocked and scared of what we are passing through today where the Government doesn’t seem to have a plan or solution on how to respond to the consequences of the policy measure put in place by their administration.”

Obaseki continued, “We have to deal with inflation, between 20 and 25 percent, because of the way they have mismanaged our national economy. Weaker members of society, like our pensioners, will feel the effects more keenly because the benefits to which they are entitled will not alleviate their hardship. The governor continued by saying, “For us in Edo State, we would not abandon you. We are committed to your welfare and well-being.” We prefer the more honest term “support” to the misleading “palliative” used by some. Those who are already affected by this policy would have our full support.

Palliative care, he claims, is dishonest, and he pledges his help to the people of Edo.
