There was a dispute today between presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore and former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who stood in for former Vise President, Atiku Abubakar at a political session of the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The conference, themed “Beyond Limits,” was attended by legal practitioners and political figures, and the political session focused on Nigeria’s political destiny in the run up to the 2027 general elections, Vanguard writes.
Discussions at the event centred on the records of Nigerian politicians who have held public office in the past and the influence of government policies especially fuel subsidies and transportation.
Reacting to the comments at the session, Amaechi said Nigerians should not allow themselves to be mislead by politicians who have governed before and failed to deliver.
“I like what Amaechi said. He stated except for Sowore and Adebayo, the rest of them have ruled before and failed. “You people should apologise to the Nigerian people,” he remarked.
Amaechi said the discourse over gasoline subsidies should also be about transport policy, referencing the railway project by a former governor of Rivers State.
We had a former governor of Rivers State who built a train line to nowhere. If the train connection was running properly, subsidy would have been working for Rivers State’, he said.
He also slammed former Anambra State governor Peter Obi for not subsidising education enough while he was in office.
“Take Peter Obi for instance, he didn’t subsidise education in his state. Lecturers and doctors were out on strike for 13 months. “You can like him as a person but he did not perform as a governor,” Amaechi added.
The ex-governor also defended his record as Minister of Transportation, saying the Lagos-Ajaokuta railway remained operational during his term.
“In my time, the Lagos-Ajaokuta railway was working. I don’t know why it is not working under Tinubu. “Same thing for Abuja-Kaduna rail,” he added.
Amaechi later focused his attention on Sowore, inviting attorneys in Rivers State to show the presidential candidate round the state.
“Please I need Rivers lawyers to take Sowore around. He said, “What’s your experience?”
He then urged Sowore to shut up when lawmakers with government experience were talking.
“Sowore, shut your mouth when politicians are talking”, Amaechi stated.
The political session had Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party and Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress.
Also at the convention was the presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
