Circus in Motion, a modern circus festival will be held in the National Theatre, Nigeria, to enhance the country’s performance arts industry and showcase Nigerian talent on the international scale.
The festival is set to take place from October 3 to 4, 2026 at the National Theatre, Lagos, with a goal to create a domestic circus business based on Nigerian culture, movement, music and storytelling.
The initiative is expected to be a forum for young Nigerian acrobats, dancers, performers and storytellers to enhance their abilities and explore new chances in the creative business, said the organisers.
The subject, Reimagining Nigerian Performance for the Global Stage, is created in a way that Circus in Motion would blend traditional Nigerian performance aspects with contemporary circus skills.
Organisers claimed the project was motivated by the amount of creative talent in Nigeria, particularly among young people, but that the country lacked the institutions and training opportunities to nurture circus as a professional art form. Africans & Diaspora
The event will open with a two-week intensive training camp, bringing together young Nigerian artists and foreign circus practitioners. Through the creation of innovative shows that reflect the Nigerian identity and experiences, participants will be trained in acrobatics, theatre and stagecraft.
The program will also include the development and production of new circus shows, which will be presented at the festival and then taken to regional and international venues.
The international organisations taking part in the festival’s program are Fekat Circus of Ethiopia, Circus Baobab of Guinea, La Fabrique Circus of Côte d’Ivoire and XY of France. The organisers also pointed to possible cooperation with Swiss circus organisations via Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council.
The first production is anticipated to bring Nigerian and foreign performers together in a creative cooperation that represents the festival’s focus on cultural exchange and artistic development.
In addition to performances, Circus in Motion will incorporate community outreach and youth engagement programs to introduce young Nigerians to contemporary circus. “We hope to inspire more people to think about careers in performance, directing, technical production and other areas of the creative industry,” said the organisers.
The plan also intends to create new employment opportunities with the development of a performance industry capable of supporting artists, technical teams and creative experts.
In its project proposal, the National Theatre acknowledged Nigeria’s rich cultural tradition in dance and movement as one of the bases for the development of a distinct contemporary circus character.
The initiative will use Nigerian acrobatics, folklore, music and craft to produce shows that portray African stories through movement and physical theatre, the organisers stated.
The organisers are also looking for more sponsors and partners to help deliver the festival.
Circus in Motion is more than a festival, it is an attempt to build a sustainable creative environment for contemporary circus in Nigeria, the organisers said.
The initiative aims to offer possibilities for Nigerian artists to enhance their skills and reach audiences outside the country through training, production, touring and international collaboration.
The event is scheduled for October, and Circus in Motion is set to deliver an alternative type of live entertainment to the National Theatre while also sparking conversations around the possibilities of contemporary circus within Nigeria’s booming creative industry.
