Six Muslim clerics were reportedly kidnaped by gunmen in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State during a prayer gathering held in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election attempt in the 2027 presidential election.
The event happened on Saturday, a report received from BBC Hausa today said.
Clerics were claimed to have joined the meeting to pray for Tinubu’s success in the 2027 election.
The event was said to have been organised by the former Governor of Zamfara State and Chairman of the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari.
Police authorities acknowledged the six clergy were abducted and said attempts were on to locate and free them.
However, the incident sparked confusion because reports emerged that the clerics were taken from Yari’s apartment where the meeting was said to have place.
The authorities’ later statement stated that initial investigations revealed the victims were not abducted from the former governor’s mansion.
Security agencies continue investigations to determine the circumstances of the abduction and locate the victims.
Despite continuous military and security operations to contain the activities of bandits in the region, Zamfara, one of several states in Northwest Nigeria, has continued to witness attacks and kidnapping by armed groups.
The current event has revived worries about the safety of public gatherings and communities in the state.
