The Police Command in Plateau has warned its officers against illegal demand and searches of mobile phones of civilians.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bassey Ewah made the warning while addressing its workers in Jos, NAN reports.
Mr Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, said this in a statement in Jos yesterday.
Alabo cited Ewah as adding that “no personnel of this command has the legitimate right to search the mobile phone of any citizen on the road without a court warrant.
The PPRO said the commissioner admonished the soldiers against unprofessional conduct, and re-echoed the command’s commitment to professionalism..
The commissioner urged residents to turn down any illegal request by workers to inspect their phones and report same to the local Police station.
Alabo further urged citizens of the state to report any instance of harassment through the following phone numbers: 08034448617, 08060545670, 08037681026, 09016146804 and 09051145757.
The PPRO underlined the command’s commitment to preserving lives, property and rights of law-abiding inhabitants in line with worldwide best practices.
