The visit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Kano residence on Thursday night has further heightened speculations that the former president is backing the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The visit of Obasanjo to the former governor of Kano State might not be unconnected with his support for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the 2019 presidential election, many sources suggest, reports Weekend Trust.
Recall that Obasanjo actively canvased support for the Obi Presidency in 2023.
There is nothing unusual about the visit. This was said yesterday by Malam Garba Shehu, former spokesman of late President Muhammadu Buhari, while contributing to a social and political commentary Hausa programme on Trust Radio, Matankadi.
Of course, the visit focuses on the 2027 election. It is no secret that President Obasanjo is backing Peter Obi to lead Nigeria.
“And Kwankwaso is very key on the ticket…“He’s got his following,” he remarked.
Kwankwaso and the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo received Obasanjo.
Saifullahi Hassan, Media Aide to Kwankwaso, confirmed the visit in a statement, calling it as an occasion for “warm exchanges” between the two leaders.
However, he did not disclose more details on what they discussed during the discussion.
Kwankwaso was a former Minister of Defence during the second tenure of Obasanjo between 2003-2007 and has maintained a close connection with him thereafter.
