The Abia State Government has initiated full enforcement of its new centralised transport system in Umuahia, as transport operators have started progressive migration to the newly created Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.
The move is a major step in the administration’s goal for urban regeneration and transport reforms, aiming at improving traffic management, passenger safety and bringing greater order in public transport within the state capital.
The state officials said the program was aimed at easing transport operations, eradicating indiscriminate loading and offloading of people and decongesting gridlock in major business and residential areas of Umuahia.
Transportation unions and operators are being directed to move their activities to the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal as part of the implementation process, which will serve as the nerve center of transportation services in the city.
“The new system would create a more organised and safe environment for the commuters. Simultaneously, the regulators would be able to effectively monitor transport operations and enforce standards across the sector,” government officials said.
The centralised transport framework is also expected to improve traffic flow and reduce travel delays and help the state’s overall objective of developing a modern and efficient urban transport network.
The government says the staggered shift aims to ensure a smooth transition and to minimise interruptions to transport services and business activity.
“We are urging transport unions, drivers, operators and residents to work with us as we implement the ongoing reforms. We assure stakeholders that this is being done in the overall interest of the state and its citizens.
The officials said the initiative will improve service delivery, improve the commuting experience and boost the management of public transit in Umuahia.
The enforcement activity will continue in phases until all the designated transport activities are fully incorporated into the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.
The construction is part of the sustained efforts of the government of Governor Alex Otti to modernise infrastructure, improve urban planning and establish a more orderly transport system across Abia State.
