His arrest followed claims of intelligence linking Akaninyene, a suspected serial killer, to the disappearance and death of many victims in Creektown, Odukpani LGA, Cross River State.
Reports say the security operatives, including men of Nigerian Army, tactical special forces trailed the suspect to a remote cabin located inside a woodland in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community.
The suspect reportedly tried to escape when he attempted to pick up a weapon from the hut, but he was promptly arrested by security operatives.
Operatives reportedly found eight shallow graves with bodies buried without heads during a search of the hideout with plantain crops placed over the graves to conceal them.
During interrogation, Akaninyene allegedly admitted to killing roughly 30 persons in the area. He is also said to have disclosed that a female accomplice had assisted in luring victims before they were killed.
The latest incident is alleged to have happened on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and is apparently suspected when residents heard cries and struggle from the victim.
Community leaders and young people sent tips to the authorities, which led to the operation that culminated in the suspect’s arrest.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the police are still investigating the matter.
