The Federal Capital Territory High Court today remanded Tunde Ayeni, ex-chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, in Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the conclusion of his bail plea.
Daily Trust says that Ayeni was hauled before the court on 17 counts bordering on money laundering to the tune of roughly N8 billion.
The ruling was granted by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie who presided over the case, after Ayeni’s attorney, Ahmed Raji (SAN), prayed for a short timetable to enable the defence move the bail motion.
The matter was adjourned to May 13, 2026 for hearing of the defendant’s bail application.
But the businessman pled not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting counsel, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN), after the plea of not guilty, urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial.
Iheanacho also prayed the court to detain Ayeni in detention until the commencement of trial.
But Raji told the court that the defence filed a bail plea on behalf of Ayeni today (Monday) and served same on the prosecution.
He said the charge was served on the defendant by the EFCC on May 1, which was a national holiday.
He asked for a short adjournment so that the bail application could be handled.
Raji informed the court that the renowned businessman had been a lawyer for over 35 years, pleading with the court to release the defendant, saying he would produce the defendant in court at the next postponed date.
