The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has in the past two weeks carried out a series of operations in a coordinated crackdown against drug dens in and around the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, leading to the arrest of 132 individuals and the recovery of about 220 kilogrammes of varied illicit drugs.
The persistent onslaught was carried out against significant drug hotspots in the Federal Capital Territory and nearby regions after weeks of intelligence collection and surveillance activities.
The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a statement issued on Friday, said the operations were meant to disrupt drug trafficking networks, demolish identified bunkers and curtail associated criminal activities in the nation’s capital.
The synchronized operations took place in many sites including Torabora Hills, Area 3, Gwarinpa, AYA, Durumi, Banex, Dei-Dei, Kubwa, Apo, Kwali, Gwagwalada, Wuse Zone 4, Garki Area 10, Jabi and the Suleja axis, among others.
During the exercise, officers seized 214.79 kilograms of skunk – a strong strain of cannabis and 5.524 kilograms of Diazepam, among other illegal substances, including Exol, Tramadol, Mogadon, Cocaine, Rohypnol, Methamphetamine, Ecstasy, Codeine syrup and related psychotropic drugs.
The agency claimed the searches are one of its most wide-ranging recent operations in the FCT, targeting established drug distribution networks operating within residential and commercial areas.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), lauded the operators of the operation, saying their efforts were essential in bringing back safety and order in the Federal Capital Territory.
Marwa reiterated the agency’s resolve to prolong the crackdown, saying the NDLEA would continue to escalate operations against drug cartels and dealers until drug trafficking networks are drastically degraded across the country.
