As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day for Maternal Health and Rights (IDMHR), Emzor Group called for more money to be spent on protecting women’s health rights and for mothers all over the country to have easier access to preventive and life-saving care.
IDMHR is a day that is celebrated every year on April 11 to raise awareness of the need for fair, respectful, and high-quality maternal care. The theme for 2026 is “Rights. Justice. Action.” “For All Women and Girls” stresses how important it is to protect women’s health rights, especially in places with few resources, and to stop unnecessary maternal deaths.
Nigeria still has a higher than normal rate of maternal deaths around the world. The World Health Organization’s Trends in Maternal Mortality 2000–2020 report, which came out in 2023, says that the country has an estimated 993 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. This is around 28 to 29 percent of all maternal fatalities in the world.
This means that almost 82,000 mothers die each year, or more than 200 every day, mostly from things that could have been avoided.
In light of this, stakeholders continue to stress the need for ongoing investments, stronger health systems, and better access to vital maternal health services and goods.
Pharm. Uzoma Ezeoke, the Executive Director of Emzor Group, stressed that maternal health should be seen as a basic right, not a privilege.
She said that making sure all women have safe pregnancies, births, and postnatal care needs careful planning, strong health systems, and ongoing cooperation between the public and private sectors. She also said that the company is still dedicated to helping enhance the health of mothers.
Ezeoke said that to improve the health of mothers, we need to use a whole-person strategy that includes prevention, nutrition, and access to life-saving drugs. She said the organization is still dedicated to creating a future where no woman dies while giving birth and where moms and their children can be as healthy and happy as possible.
Mr. Kunle Faloye, the Head of Marketing at Emzor, said that the company is helping healthcare systems by providing high-quality, low-cost pharmaceutical goods that meet important needs for maternal health.
He went on to say that these interventions include nutrition, prenatal care, and postpartum support. He also said that investments in local manufacturing are meant to enhance access, make sure that supplies are reliable, and give moms and newborns better outcomes.
Emzor has kept growing its presence in maternal health solutions through its subsidiary, Zolon Healthcare Limited.
Eprostol, a misoprostol formulation, is one of its main products. It helps with a number of obstetric problems, such as managing postpartum hemorrhage and cervical ripening, in accordance with professional guidelines.
The company said that this is the first locally made misoprostol suite in Nigeria, giving healthcare workers credible options for caring for mothers.
Pharm. Obiajulu Onwuzor, the Head of Marketing at Zolon Healthcare, said that the subsidiary is focused on providing quality-assured, locally made products that follow clinical best practices. This further supports this goal. She went on to say that improving the ability to make things locally is helping to fill in important gaps in access to important medicines for mothers’ health.
Emzor also works to prevent malaria during pregnancy. The company says that its product, Maldox, lowers the risk of maternal anemia and low birth weight in newborns. This is in line with the World Health Organization’s recommended strategy for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria during pregnancy.
The company also said that its larger maternal and child health portfolio includes iron supplements, multivitamins, and essential micronutrients that help with healthy pregnancy and fetal development. It also includes nutritional products like folic acid and Em-B-Plex that help improve the health of mothers and children.
