Bandits broke into a wedding celebration in Kahir village in Kaduna state’s Kagarko Local Government Area, killing 13 people and taking an unknown number of others.
Shehu Bala, who lives in Kagarko, told our reporter over the phone today that the event took at about 11:47 pm last night.
According to Daily Trust, he added that the bandits, who were several and armed with A-K 47 rifles, attacked the wedding site and began fire in the hall.
He added that a number of persons who were shot were transferred to Kagarko General Hospital right away. He also said that two other people who were badly hurt were taken to Kaduna.
“In fact, two of my friends who were in the hall also got shot during the attack,” he claimed.
“However, it is impossible to know how many people were kidnapped because of the random shootings.”
A community leader who didn’t want to be named also told our reporter over the phone today that the event happened.
He said that among of the people that died were Bako Danjuma, Williams Luka, Peter Williams, Joseph Yakubu,
Victor Peter, John Dan Asabe, Angulu Markus, Maikano Aribi, and Douglas John
Ado Yakubu, Zaphaniah Alhaji, Joseph Kaddah, and Francis Unguwa Doya.
He stated that the criminals, who went about their business without being stopped for almost an hour, also broke into local stores and stole food, supplies, and drugs from a chemist in the area.
The community leader did say, though, that the dead had been buried and that no contact has been made with the kidnappers yet.
“The whole community was thrown into chaos because of the bandits’ random shooting that night,” the community leader stated. “Some people even had to run into the bush.”
A police source in the Kagarko division also verified the event, but he stated the authorities still didn’t know how many people were kidnapped during the attack.
When asked, DSP Hassan Mansur, the spokesperson for the Kaduna state police command, also verified the kidnappings and murders. He said that the command would provide a full report on the incident later in the day.
He said, “The command doesn’t have all the information about what happened in the Kahir community yet, but they will make a full report available once they do.”
Our correspondent found out for sure that the deputy governor of the state, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, and Senator Sani Musa (313) have gone to the hospital in Kagarko to see the injured victims.
Earlier reports said that bandits had been attacking various communities, including Janjala.
Fourteen people, including a vigilante and his wife who were kidnapped in the region three weeks ago, are still being held.
