Bayero University Kano has said that it will take stray animals that are spotted on its campuses and punish their owners.
Lamara Garba, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, spoke on behalf of the Registrar today and said that “the rearing of animals within the university premises is strictly prohibited” according to the Revised Guidelines for Staff Housing Allocation and Maintenance.
The PUNCH said that the university management says the action is part of attempts to enforce current housing rules and keep the staff quarters clean and healthy.
It stressed that people who have the minimum number of pets allowed must keep them in a safe place.
The statement read, “Letting animals roam freely around the university community breaks the rules and is bad for the environment, health, and safety.”
Management said that the Security Division “will immediately begin arresting and impounding stray animals found roaming on university campuses.”
It made clear that “owners of these animals will be found and held responsible according to existing laws.”
The university management also said that members who didn’t follow the rules will face the consequences listed in the Staff Quarters Residency Guidelines.
The university asked everyone who lives on the Old and New Campuses, in the Zoo Road Staff Quarters, or in the School of Continuing Education to fully follow the rules. They stressed that the rules are required to “maintain order, hygiene, and the integrity of the campus environment.”
