After being persuaded by counsel at a New Year Mass, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has instructed his attorneys to drop all pending defamation cases against a number of people.
Akpabio said he has filed almost nine cases against those he claimed were defaming him during a speech at the Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo today, according to The PUNCH.
“I had nearly nine cases in court against some people who lied against me, defamed me, and slandered my name,” he stated.
“However, after listening to the priest, I became aware that he was speaking to me. Therefore, I am directing my attorney to drop all legal actions against them.”
Akpabio initiated a number of well-known defamation lawsuits in 2025, including one against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a colleague.
Akpabio accused her of sexual harassment, which he denied and asked her to prove in court. He launched a N200 billion defamation case against her in late 2025.
Akpabio’s wife also sued Akpoti-Uduaghan for defamation earlier this year, claiming that the claims had damaged her family’s reputation.
Following her public accusations of misbehavior, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of influencing her suspension from the Senate in March 2025, which caused a rift between the two members.
The Senator had previously launched a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio and other defendants over purported comments that she claimed harmed her reputation, among other legal challenges to acts taken against her.
Akpabio has officially concluded all outstanding legal issues resulting from defamation allegations with today’s announcement, bringing the well-publicized litigations to a close as the year gets underway.
