Danjuma Shekwolo, the chairman of the Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reversed his earlier comments that asked citizens to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the council.
The comment was made during a gathering with APC youth and supporters, Shekwolo said, adding that the comment drew criticism after a video of him went viral.
It was not meant, he maintained, to deny people their rights on the basis of political allegiance.
In the video, Shekwolo said he would not tolerate opposition from the citizens who had benefitted from the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
I have told in my area council, either you are doing APC or you quit the area council. That’s not what I’m battling with you about,” he said.
But the chairman said the words were made during a discussion on administrative efficiency, local development and welfare of citizens in a statement today.
“It will be recalled that the unfortunate incident was a consequence of a meeting with the APC party youths and loyalists.”
Shekwolo admitted that as chairman of the council, he had no ability to take away the fundamental rights of any resident.
He told the citizens that his administration would continue to rule fairly and develop all the areas in Kuje.
