In the second mass shooting in South Africa this month, police reported today that 10 people were killed and 10 injured in an attack at a slum outside of Johannesburg by unidentified gunmen.
Police told our correspondent that they were unsure of the reason behind the attack at Bekkersdal, which is 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the city.
According to a police statement, “some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen.”
“Ten persons have passed away. Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the Gauteng province police spokesperson, told our correspondent, “We don’t have a breakdown of who they are.”
According to AFP, the incident happened close to a pub or unofficial bar in Bekkersdal, a poor neighborhood close to some of South Africa’s largest gold mines.
According to authorities, the injured were transferred to a hospital.
Twelve people, including a three-year-old kid, were killed when gunmen broke into a hostel outside of Pretoria on December 6.
According to police, the shooting occurred at a location where alcohol was being sold illegally.
With 63 million residents, South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
