A police officer in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, viciously beat his three children because he thought they were witches. This has caused a lot of anger in the city.
Reports from Sunday Vanguard said that the accused police inspector, who goes by the name John and works for the Anti-Cultism unit of the Igbogene police unit, was arrested after the event that happened over the weekend.
Eyewitnesses say that worried neighbors called the State Security Patrol unit, Doo Akpor, who saved the kids and took them to the hospital for treatment.
There are worries about the children’s safety while they are getting treatment, even if their status is said to be stable.
At the same time, different groups, such as the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Bayelsa chapter led by Dr. Bomq Toney Miebai, the National Association of Women Against Gender Based Violence led by Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, and the Chairperson of the Do Foundation, Bayelsa chapter, Dianna Iluma, have all spoken out against what happened.
The groups have filed criminal assault and attempted murder charges against the police inspector at the Akenfa Police Station, it has been learned.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender has also gotten involved. The Permanent Secretary went to the police station and hospital to get further information.
Harry replied, “The CP has ordered the arrest of the accused and the case to be sent to the police headquarters.”
“He has promised that the case would be fully looked into and that the person accused will face the full weight of the law. We are asking people and groups who care about others to help them regain their life back.
Musa Muhammed, the State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the news when we called him, but he said he didn’t have a lot of details.
