Tragedy as Woman Linked to Equatorial Guinea Official’s Sex Tape Scandal Commits Suicide
The explosive scandal involving Baltasar Engonga, Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (NFIA), has taken a tragic turn following reports of a woman linked to the case who died by suicide. The shocking revelation adds a darker dimension to an already high-profile case that has rocked the nation.
Authorities recently detained Engonga, 54, after an investigation uncovered hundreds of recorded intimate encounters involving high-profile figures, including the wives and relatives of senior government officials. Over 400 videos, allegedly recorded by Engonga without consent, were discovered in an unplanned search of his residence and office, triggering public outrage.
Among those reportedly involved in the recordings are the wife of Engonga’s brother, the sister of the president, the wife of the police chief, and wives of several ministers. The scandal has captivated Equatorial Guinea and drawn international attention, especially after some of the videos surfaced online.
“While consensual relationships aren’t criminal under Equatorial Guinean law, coercion or exploitation is entirely unacceptable,” said Attorney General Nzang Nguema, who raised concerns about possible health risks arising from the case and urged anyone coerced or exploited to come forward.
Local media outlet Ahora EG reported that while many encounters appeared consensual, some recordings were made within Engonga’s office, often displaying the national flag, sparking further outrage over misuse of public spaces for private escapades.
The government swiftly suspended Engonga and other officials implicated in using public facilities for inappropriate activities. Vice President Nguema Mangue emphasized the administration’s “zero-tolerance stance on actions that undermine the integrity of public service,” urging officials to uphold high ethical standards.
However, news of the woman’s suicide—circulating widely on social media—has led to renewed calls for accountability and further investigation into the scandal’s human impact. “This tragedy underscores the severe emotional toll this case has inflicted on those entangled in it,” a local activist stated, reflecting a sentiment echoed by many in Equatorial Guinea.
The unfolding case now poses deeper questions about the personal and social impacts of the scandal, casting a somber shadow over the country and further intensifying the call for justice and reform.
