Naira scarcity: Order Emefiele to supply banks, Afenifere tells Buhari
Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to supply commercial banks with both old and new naira notes.
It also urged the president to exert pressure on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to make petroleum products widely available.
It expressed new concerns about the scarcity of naira notes, despite the president’s comments last week that he was not opposed to the Supreme Court order’s implementation.
The group urged Buhari to follow through on his promise to extend the deadline for exchanging old notes until December 31.
Jare Ajayi, the organization’s National Publicity Secretary, stated that reports from various parts of the country indicated that people were still having difficulty obtaining cash from banks and point of sale (POS) operators.
“This is making life very difficult for our people, and the situation is forcing many businesses, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, to fail,” the group said in a statement.
Buhari, through his spokesman, Garba Shehu, stated that he did not prevent the CBN governor or the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), from following the Supreme Court’s order.
However, Afenifere lamented that the naira scarcity persisted, with banks still limiting the amount a customer could withdraw.
It warned that the country and the citizens “are in for serious economic and social upheavals” if the trend continued.
