The Sokoto State Government has donated 10 operable vehicles to the Nigerian Army to enhance security along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway corridor.
The vehicles were formally commissioned and handed over to the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto on Thursday, 8 October, 2026. Minister of State for Works Bello Muhammad Goronyo handed over on behalf of the Minister for Works David Umahi.
The governor, Ahmed Aliyu, handed over the vehicles to boost the operating capabilities of security officers deployed to secure the construction workers, contractors, equipment and host communities along the roadway.
Goronyo said the donation was a show of the commitment of the Sokoto State Government to the national development and successful implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The superhighway is a significant national infrastructure passing through Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states over a distance of 1,068 kilometres, he added.
“This very important arterial road corridor is a stretch of about 1,068 kilometres and it is going to cut across Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states,” Goronyo added. The corridor, he said, would link the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Trans-Saharan highway.
The minister said the highway would be built in reinforced concrete to ensure its longevity of 50 years or more. “Good security is a prerequisite for the timely completion of the project,” he stressed.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major-General Bemgba Koughna, who represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said the vehicles will enhance the Army’s capacity to secure the project.
Koughna said the Army has 17 independent deployments and routine patrols spanning the stretch of about 440-kilometres covering the Sokoto and Kebbi axis.
“The vehicles will be put to good use to secure the 440-kilometre superhighway stretch between Sokoto and Kebbi states,” he said.
He stated that the cars would be correctly deployed to protect construction workers, contractors, equipment and other stakeholders in the project.
The retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Aliyu Garba, officials of the Federal Ministry of Works, representatives of Sokoto State Government and other stakeholders attended the occasion.
