Redeemer’s Health Village has successfully performed a tele-robotic surgery, the first of its kind in Nigerian medicine. The procedure was performed by a surgeon on a patient in a distant city.
The historic treatment was performed on September 19 as a combined effort by Redeemer’s Health Village, RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital.
Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a professor of Urology and Transplantation, manned the robotic console at Redeemer’s Health Village as the patient lay on the operating table at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja some hundred kilometres away.
During the three hour operation the surgical team extracted a kidney damaged by a malignant growth. Now the patient is said to be in an excellent condition.
Redeemer’s Health Village has called the operation the first telesurgery to take place anywhere in West Africa, a milestone it believes marks the beginning of a new era of remote access to sophisticated surgical care.
Reacting to the achievement, Professor Ekwenna-Davis said: “Distance should never determine who gets safe surgery.
RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital backed the successful operation, which makes Redeemer’s Health Village the first in Nigeria to offer robotic-assisted, cross-city surgery, a discovery that could transform specialist treatment for patients living outside major urban centers.
