The United States on Wednesday approved a possible $2.68 billion transfer of air defence weaponry to Ukraine, which has repeatedly appealed for help to fight off strikes by Russia.
The State Department stated it had “made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of air-defense development upgrades and related equipment and services” in a notification to Congress.
Kyiv has asked to buy equipment including several types of missiles, launchers, counter-drone radars and trailers, the State Department said.
The potential transaction, reported AFP, is subject to congressional clearance.
“If the sale is completed, Ukraine would pay for the acquisition with a combination of European contributions and U.S. Foreign Military Financing appropriated during the previous Administration,” the State Department said.
“It’s supposed to cost a total of $2.68 billion.”
A wave of Russian strikes has hit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, with its air defences unable to stop them due to a lack of ammunition.
