Bamanga Tukur, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, passed away at the age of ninety.
According to a statement sent by his family and signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur, Tukur passed away, Saturday, September 12, 2026.
The former PDP chairman led a life of dedication to his family, community, Adamawa State, and Nigeria, according to the family, who referred to him as their “beloved father and patriarch.”
“The family announces the passing of our beloved father and patriarch, Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, who returned to his Creator today, September 12, 2026, with deep sadness and complete submission to the will of Almighty Allah,” he stated.
The family conveyed gratitude for the support, prayers, and condolences they received after his passing.
It stated that information about the funeral prayer, or Janazah, and other burial plans would be shared at a later time.
He said, “We pray that Almighty Allah grants him Aljannatul Firdaus, accepts his good deeds, and forgives his shortcomings.”
Tukur would have turned 91 in three days. He was born on September 15, 1935.
He was the Minister of Industries under the late General Sani Abacha’s military rule and a former governor of the defunct Gongola State.
Tukur also had a number of roles in business and African economic advocacy, including General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
In March 2012, while former President Goodluck Jonathan was in office, he was appointed National Chairman of the PDP.
During his time as PDP chairman, the party was experiencing internal strife, which included the rise of the “New PDP” faction in 2013.
Following his resignation as national chairman in January 2014, Tukur was named Ambassador-at-Large by the Jonathan government.
